Your Union

Month of Games

February sees the Union become a hotbed of fierce rivalry and competition as our Games Committee bring you a whole month jam-packed with all things Games, and members battle it out to be immortalized as a Month of Games champion.
As well as getting their hands on a fantastic prize the winner of each event sees their name inscribed on one of our legendary winners boards, giving the winner the chance to bask in their glorious victory for generations to come.
The events during Month of Games have been highlights of the members’ diaries for decades. Here’s just a few of the events you can expect to see!

B.A.D.G.E -  The Big All Day Games Event
The best thing about BADGE is that ANYTHING can happen. Throughout the day teams of three compete in an event where no two games are the same and every year there is a new method to the madness.
This event is a true test of stamina, courage, brains and speed. In recent years participants have had to score rugby conversions, try their hand at arts and crafts, fire water balloons using a giant catapult, and race ‘chariots’ in Kelvingrove Park!
Each year the hottest battle for points happens during the Scavenger Hunt that takes place all over the West End of Glasgow. It has seen competitors return to the Union with anything from pants to pets and even pensioners!
B.A.D.G.E. remains the jewel in the crown of GUU Games events and is the most fun anyone can possibly have in one day.

IRON STOMACH
Iron Stomach is one of the Union’s longest-running games events with the boards in the Beer Bar detailing a line of winners that stretches all the way back to the 1960s. The aim of the game is to eat your food faster than your opponents can eat theirs.  Sounds easy, right?
Beware….. Competing is not for the faint of heart, mind or stomach. Rounds in previous years have ranged from a four-pint jug of milk to chips and cheese (i.e. a block of cheddar and a potato) and EVERYTHING in between.
Alas, don’t despair. Iron Stomach guarantees a packed Beer Bar, and the ever-vocal crowds always encourage a competitor on when the going gets a little bit too tough.
It is a spectacle not to be missed and it will provide memories that will stay with you for the rest of your life.

DODGEBALL
Dodgeball is one of the newer events to MoG but don’t let that fool you. The competition is very intense with teams co-ordinating for the occasion in a wide array of battle attire. Dodgeball takes place in our hallowed Debates Chamber and when the gallery is full of eager spectators, the teams take to the floor in a showdown of mammoth proportions.
Remember, if you can dodge a wrench you can dodge a ball.

Month of Games also sees extended and super-sized editions of many of GUU’s Games favourites such as Darts, Poker, Pool and Snooker, while our regular Monday night Beer Bar Quiz is transformed into the QUIZ EXTRAVAGANZA with lots of extra rounds and challenges to test you to the limit.

All in all the Month of Games is a month jam-packed with fun and mischief and is a rite of passage for every student before graduating into the real world. Although many events are listed here, it is important to keep your ear to the ground throughout February as there are always some spontaneous events and, like any good competitor, we like to keep our top trump close to our chest right up until the final play.
All the best for the tough weeks of training ahead of you and if you have any questions about the Month of Games feel free to speak to a Games Committee member at one of our regular games events.
