Your Union

Board of Management

The President - Davey Lockhart

The President is the chairman and spokesperson of Glasgow University Union. It is his job to liaise with the university officials and media on behalf of the Union. In addition to this, the President is in charge of co-ordinating events and outreach initiatives to the many thousands of Union Life Members, for example anniversary dinners.

The current president is David Lockhart. David has previously served as a Present Student Member and as Libraries Convener. He has been heavily involved in the Entertainments Committee, Union debating, and the organisation of the Worlds Debating Championships 30th Anniversary celebrations. David regularly frequents a number of GUU events, such as Open Mic, parliamentary debates (where he is the opening afternoon speaker for the mighty Independent Socialists), and games events. Outwith the Union, David’s interests include football, music and American history.

Honorary Secretary - Gavin Tulloch

From Freshers’ Week to Daft Friday, elections to being the licence-holder of the building, Gavin oversees it all. On top of all this, he also has to deal with discipline cases, function bookings and just about everything else that is thrown his way by the President.

Gavin is a third year English Literature & Language student from Forres. He enjoys music, grammatical pedantry, reading and eating out, and plays the bagpipes in his spare time. Gavin never tires of watching the Sopranos.

Assistant Honorary Secretary - Robbie Warke

The Assistant Honorary Secretary is the third member of the Executive Committee. His official role is to look after the interests of the rest of the Board, maintaining their efficiency and ensuring they are happy in their various roles, alongside managing the affiliation of University clubs and societies with GUU. Representatives of any University clubs and societies looking to form links with GUU, should never hesitate to get in contact!

Robbie is a third year Bioveterinary Science student from Northern Ireland. When he is not in raving wildly in The Hive with a pint of fun in hand, he can usually be seen taking part in everything GUU has to offer. He loves sitting watching pointless movies with friends, plays the guitar and has a wild passion for anything starring Mila Kunis.

Convener of Debates - Imogen Dewar

The Debates Convener is in charge of running the Union’s debating events, as well as sending speakers to represent the Union in both national and international debating competitions. Imogen is a 2nd year Law student from Edinburgh. She loves nothing more than proudly making her 9 o’clock lectures after a serious night enjoying the dance floor in the Hive. Other interests include piano, saxophone, debating for GUU and getting a daily dose of her favourite TV programme, Neighbours

Convener of Games - Louise Graham

The Convener of Games is in charge of the Union’s Games Committee and is responsible for running the Monday night Beer Bar Quiz and Wednesday night Poker and Snooker competitions. The Games Committee also runs the EPIC Month of Games in February with events including Pool, Snooker & Darts comps, Dodgeball, BADGE and Iron Stomach (yummy).

Louise is a 3rd year Accountancy student from the Scottish Borders. She enjoys cups of tea, crisps and Gavin and Stacey. She is terrified of popcorn. Her influences include Nelly and all members of Goldie Lookin’ Chain.

Convener of Libraries - Alice Johnson

The Libraries Convener is in charge of the Unions’ two libraries – The Bridie and Elliot. She also heads up the Libraries Committee who are responsible for producing our monthly publication, the GUUi.

Alice is a 2nd year English Language student from Helensburgh. An avid fan of One Direction, Alice enjoys sharing plates of spaghetti and long walks on the beach.

Convener of Entertainments - Ally Farrell

The Entertainments Convener is Ally Farrell - in charge of the Entertainments (or ‘Entz’) Committee, who run Open Mic on a Friday, comedy events and themed nights in Hive. One of the most important roles of the Entertainments Convener is booking acts for Freshers Week, Refreshers Week and club nights.

Ally is a politics student from the capital city of the world, Peebles. He has a strange obsession with the colour green and knows far too much about rubbish celebrities. The lowest moment in his life was when Lee Ryan from the popular boy band Blue called him a ‘failed journalist’. He’s written for the GUUi before though, so that’s obviously not true.

Present Student Members

Present Student Members (more commonly referred to as PSMs) are responsible for the day to day running of the Union and its activities. Our PSMs take it in turn to complete a week of duty in the Union. They keep the place ship-shape, answer any queries you might have and assist the Executive in running the club nights.

Ava Daneva

Ava is a third year Psychology/Management student from Bulgaria/USA. If you aren’t sure who she am, well, she is the one who is always in the Union on duty. In the scarce time when she isnt working, she loves watching movies with her friends, loves sleepovers, can’t imagine life without music…etc. You should also know that Monday night is a strictly “Gossip Girl”, “Family guy” and “Once Upon A Time” zone. Her dream? To get a fat cat for the union!!”

Karen Cossar

Karen is a third year law student, from the outskirts of Edinburgh, enjoying her second year as a PSM. When she can escape GUU, she enjoys skiing and socialising with the University Ski and Snowboard Club, and highland dancing, which she is significantly better at than dancing on the podium! She loves Harry Potter, and aims one day to be able to complete the Name 200 quiz on Sporcle!

Tony Docherty

Tony is a PSM and is attempting 1st year mechanics for the third time. So in Tony’s case, PSM stands for Pretty Stupid Mechanic.

In Tony’s spare time, he enjoys taking in the sights of his hometown Dunblane, finely trimming his stubble and scouring the high streets for plain black t-shirts.Somehow Tony has a blackbelt in Tae-Kwon Do, so if you ever meet him in the Beer Bar, ask him to show his party trick of kicking the ceiling. It’s really impressive

Linzi Hamilton

Linzi is a History and Politics student all the way from the glory land that is Stirling. Not only is she fizzy, ginger and phenomenal but she’s ginger. Her ambition in life is to be the perfect woman as she enjoys nothing more than casually baking cakes of an afternoon. If you don’t find her in the kitchen, you’ll see her wandering around Hive aimlessly, pint of fun in hand, with a distinct lack of footwear. Post-Hive Linzi can be found chinning copious amounts of coleslaw in her hungover slumber. If this doesn’t convince you that she’s a great person, I don’t know what will!

Mhairi McComish

Mhairi is a History and Politics student straight out the ghetto that is E-burgh. When not riding (horses that is) she can be found kicking around in a onesie watching great TV shows like Come Dine With Me and the classic that is Tracey Beaker. Mhairi is also known as ‘pidge’ due to her uncanny resemblance to a pigeon. When she’s not pecking people in playing fields, Mhairi can be found on the podium busting out stellar dance moves from the likes of The Inbetweeners Movie. When she finishes University Mhairi want to spread her wings and fly round the world like the dirty wee pigeon that she is.

Breffni O'Connor

Breffni is a 3rd year Zoology student hailing from a lovely, open corner of South West Ireland, which perhaps explains her motivation to marry someone who can offer her plenty of acres of land to explore and rear cattle in.
Not only did Breffni discover foods other than potato when she came to Glasgow but also the wonderful union, it introduced her to drinks other than Guinness and music other than B*witched and Westlife
When Breffni is not out-drinking everyone in the GUU or ruling the world from the top of the podium, you can find her contorting herself into mind-boggling moves, and bringing home trophies for GUPDC, on stage busting a move with Dancemania!, or throwing herself down a river with GUCC. It is highly likely that if you try to find Breffni in person, she will be dressed up in another outrageous costume.

Aisling Holling

Aisling is a 2nd year Physiology student. Her name is pronounced ‘Ash-ling’, yes it’s a real name, which comes from the Irish language. Despite the name she is from the beautiful Scottish Borders, so of course loves everything rugby related and walking through the countryside. Most of her clothes are covered in paint from Daft Friday committee or Hive juice from the Hive funnily enough, but on the occasion she scrubs up alright. She has been likened to Wise Owl from Winnie the Pooh and her goal in life is to own a dog and 2 cats.

Ilian Mitev

Ilian is a 1st(to be 2nd) year Philosophy and Politics student, from Bulgaria, currently residing in Luxembourg, yet pretending to be Scottish. When he isn’t stumbling round the Hive on a Thursday night, he can be found debating for the Mighty Independent Socialists in the Union’s Parliamentary. Outside the GUU he is seen attempting to play rugby, computing and watching movies, while also taking pride in giving supposedly “the best hugs on campus”. Lastly, loving cute animations means he will never say no to watching “How to train your dragon” and cuddling up.

Fergus Gill

Fergus is a 2nd year Zoology student from bonny Perthshire. When Thursday night rolls around he can usually be found taking on all comers at foosball or enjoying a few cheeky dice shots. His favourite tv show was The Hour which he credited to his admiration of Michelle McManus. His other interests include a spot of photography and enthusing over a nice bit of nature. He lists David Attenborough as his hero in life.

Owen Martin

Owen is a 2nd year English Lit and Theatre student from Auchterarder which is a tiny village in the middle of nowhere. He is guaranteed to be in the Hive on a Thursday night unless he has a really, really good excuse (like the mumps). He thoroughly enjoys hammering bits of wood together in preparation for Daft Friday and does loads of exercise by attending tennis once a semester. He is addicted to some really fantastic TV shows (One Tree Hill being his personal fave) and his favourite thing in the world is his ridiculously cute puppy Lola.
