Pick Your Poison

Harriet Johnston shares what makes her head spin on a Halloween Night!

26 October 2012

Halloween is not just about the dressing up and the trick or treating anymore. It’s about the heavy boozing, and the multiple nights out which you may or not remember the next day. Whether you’re having a big themed flat party, or simply having a few people over for pre drinks, there’s no better way to kick off the night than with some bloody beverages and shocking shots.

The Brain Haemorrhage (shot)
- Half shot of peach schnapps
- Half shot of Baileys (or similar Tesco’s own
version)
- Dribble of Grenadine

Everybody loves a good shot, and this one’s about as tasty as it sounds. Baileys will curdle in the schnapps, and if you’ve got any grenadine pop that in too, it’ll give it a lovely reddy tinge. Perfect for impressing people with your creativity skills, and they’ll get you smashed too. Nice to have some variation from Sambuca anyway.

Ghosts In A Graveyard (cocktail)
- Ice (if you’re that way inclined…takes up
vital alcohol space in my opinion, but you
know, it looks classier).
- 2 shots of black vodka
- Orange Juice

(You can find black vodka in Asda or Sainsburys, will
probably set you back about £13 quid)

Place ice in a tall glass. Pour juice into glass. Flip a spoon (preferably of the tea variety) upside down and pour the vodka over that, into the glass. The vodka should sit on the top of the juice and create a solid layer of black. If you’re feeling fancy you could pop a bit of licourice in there for decoration too. Not sure how ghosts or graveyards come into it…but all the same. Enjoy.

Or alternatively, if vodka’s not your poison, or if thatsounds a little too tame…

The Axe Murderer (cocktail)
- Half shot of Amaretto
- Half shot of Gin
- Half shot of Rum
- Half shot of Tequila
- Half shot of Triple Sec
- Half shot of Vodka
- Splash of lemonade
- Pineapple Juice (if there’s any space left in
the cup)

This one is probably one for the whole flat to bring alcohol
to contribute to, unless you have an insane drinks cabinet.
Sounds a bit like a dirty pint, but the pineapple juice just
makes it that little bit more drinkable.

Ecto Plasm (punch)
- Curacao
- Archers
- Southern Comfort
- Triple Sec
- Vodka
- Orange Juice
- Pinapple Juice

Punch seems like something very middle aged, but actually
it’s just a good way to get everybody absolutely trolleyed
whilst drinking from a big collective pot. Whack as
much as you want in there, use the biggest pot/bucket/
cauldron and huddle around it, witchy style. Not the nicest
name, but it’s Halloween, what do you expect?

Why not indulge yourself in some Halloween drinking
games too – hollow out a pumpkin and use it for ring of
fire drinking. Alternatively, see how many apples you can
bob for within a minute. However many you leave in the
basin is the number of shots you have to do; definitely
gets harder as the drinks flow.
