In 2005 Glasgow University Union suffered perhaps its biggest financial deficit in the 125 years of its existence. Massive cuts in the block grant from the University over a few years beforehand, coupled with poor trading performances and previously committed spending, led to several hundreds of thousands of pounds being wiped from our reserves - to the extent that, for a while, a future for the Union looked unlikely!
Thankfully, this is no longer the case. A change in personnel and swingeing austerity measures, have brought about a certain degree of stability. However, the future remains challenging and the Union lives under constant threat that the block grant will be removed altogether
It is on this premise that Glasgow University Union has begun a new initiative to re-engage its Life Members and focus on bringing back the many thousands whom spent their formative years shaping their lives (and livers), at the bottom of Gilmorehill!
Purchasing a Life Membership at Glasgow University Union entitles you to join a community that is rich in the tradition and excellence of the Union’s former members. It allows you to keep up-to-date with the current events at 32 University Avenue, and offers you the opportunity to re-invest in the Union, to ensure that the current members can enjoy similar experiences. If you wish to become a life member please contact the Honarary Secretary, Neil MacGregor at honsec@guu.co.uk
In order to do so, we ask that you become involved in Friends of Glasgow University Union. Friends of GUU aims to ensure the financial wellbeing of the Union, to ensure that we never again hear the words insolvent and GUU in the same breath. To that end we intend to raise capital and to hold it in trust for the Union should the need ever arise. We also intend to fund activities (such as showcase debates) which have sadly been victims of the necessary cutbacks.
This Union has been the catalyst for many careers, reputations and friendships; it continues to be the driving force behind thousands of students at Glasgow University. We ask that you remain involved and give something back to Glasgow University Union.

Thanks for your feedback!
